今から300年以上前に存在した「幻燈機」という装置は現在のプロジェクターの原型と言える投影機構で、当時の光学的な先端技術を持った機械でありながら、工芸品のような実用性と美しい外観を兼ね備えている。欧米ではMagic lantan、日本では幻燈と呼ばれたことから、投影という現象が当時の人々に魔術的な驚きをもって受け止められ、投影することの神秘性と科学が幻燈機には同時に混在していたと読み取れる。私はこの幻燈機の存在に魅了されながら、投影の”始まり”はどんなものだったのか、という考えを巡らすようになった。レンズによる投影の起源がいつだったのか、は定かではないが、その効果との出会いの最小単位を思い見ることはできる。レンズと光源があれば投影という現象は否応にも発生し、それこそ”丸く研磨された水晶玉”と”蝋燭の灯り”があれば成立する。
　「球体の透明な石」と「光源」という純粋な構造をプロジェクション・メディアの原器として位置づけ、人類の好奇心と想像力を育んだであろう、そのレンズと光の原初的な神秘と科学を体現する投影装置はどのようなものになり得るだろうか。「月夜見の幻燈」は水晶玉と光源による投影現象を余すこと無く表出するために、設計と制作を続けている。水晶を中心に光が衛星（月）のように旋回し、あらゆる場所に光の現象を投影することが可能である。宝物でありながら球体レンズである水晶玉を介して照射される原初的な光の魔術を空間全位にわたってインストールする、そして当時の幻燈機のように工芸的な実用美と科学的な機構が混在した存在であるような、そんな幻燈機を目指してる。

More than 300 years ago from now there was a device called “Gentou(Magic lantern)”. This was a prototype of the modern day projector, a machine with advanced optical technology at its time, which combines practicality and beauty like art. As it was called Magic Lantern in the West and “Gentou” in Japan, the phenomenon of projection was received by the people of the time with magical surprise, as the mystery and science of projection were combined in the gentou. I was fascinated by it, and wondered what was the “beginning" of projection like? I started to ponder about it. I do not know when the the lens-based projection started, but we can think of the minimum unit of encounter with that effect. With a lens and a light source, the phenomenon called projection will occur eventually. Things like "round polished crystal ball" and "candle light" should be enough. When I thought of it, I wanted to make an gentou that embodies mystery and science by placing a pure structure of “transparent spherical stone” and a “light source” as a prototype of a projection media that captures the curiosity and imagination of mankind. The “tsukiyomi gentou” or moonlight lantern is continuously designed and produced in order to fully express the projection phenomenon by a crystal ball and a light source. With the crystal in the center, the light turns like a satellite (moon), and you can project the light phenomenon everywhere. My purpose is to create a gentou whose existence combines artistic practical beauty like the gentou in the past and modern-day science by installing a crystal ball, which is not only a treasure but acts as a spherical lens, through which a light source is illuminated throughout the space.
